It was the summer of 2024, as I was exiting the swimming pool in Berlin, when I saw a young girl, perhaps 22 years old, wearing a black T-shirt with the words: Peace written in English, Hebrew & Arabic. Peace-Salam-Shalom.
It was the summer of 2024, several months into the Israel-Hamas war, following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7th 2023. 9 months have passed, and in the meantime tens of thousands of people died in Israel and Gaza. Hundreds of thousands were displaced and no ceasefire and hostage deal was in sight.
At the same time, the war between Russia and Ukraine was going on for over 2 years, claiming thousands of victims.
Wars in Darfur and Sudan, evaporating women's rights in Afghanistan and Iran. The far right gaining power around the world.
I felt great despair. I was depressed and felt hopeless. All I saw around me were sides. Nationalistic symbols all around. I felt mostly alone in my wish for peace, which I shared with a group of activists at the time.
And then I saw this young women, wearing this T-shirt, giving space for Hebrew and Arabic speakers, and the international community to exist next to each other. Even if only on a T-Shirt.
I approached the woman and thanked her for wearing this. For having the courage to do so in the open.
I left the pool feeling hopeful, with a vision of advocating for peace and unity through everyday fashion.
I wanted to put the intention in dressing up. Dressing up for peace. Cause dressing for peace is standing for peace. Together. Everywhere.
